BJIM calls for immediate protection of journalists in Gaza

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM) expresses grave concern over the continued killing and targeting of journalists working and living in Gaza, and calls for urgent international action to protect all media workers operating in the region.

We join the responsible global community in urging the Israeli government to cease attacks on journalists and to uphold the principles of press freedom and international humanitarian law.

According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), over 200 journalists and media workers have been killed since October 2023, making Gaza the deadliest place in the world for journalists. With access denied to most international media, the burden of documenting this war has fallen on local Palestinian journalists, who continue their work under unimaginable risks: aerial bombardment, displacement, famine, and the collapse of basic medical infrastructure.

The toll on the media community has been devastating. BJIM stands in solidarity with the families of the fallen, and with the survivors who continue to carry cameras, microphones, and notepads through scenes of destruction and grief. No journalist should be forced to choose between telling the truth and staying alive.

We believe firmly: an attack on one journalist, anywhere, is an attack on journalism everywhere.
BJIM urgently calls for:

- The Israeli government must immediately cease targeting journalists and civilian infrastructures.
- The international community must ensure safe humanitarian corridors and emergency evacuation for media workers trapped in Gaza.
- All parties must reaffirm their commitment to press freedom and the protection of civilians in times of war.
Journalism is not a crime. The world must not look away.
