BJIM condemns merciless attack on university journalist
Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM) strongly condemns a brutal attack carried out by alleged political activists on state-run Chittagong University’s Prothom Alo correspondent Mosharraf Shah.
Mosharraf, 24, a university student himself, was attacked by 15-20 men while he was on his way to gather news inside the university campus. He was ambushed and beaten with stumps and sticks while the attackers kept telling him not to write about Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student-wing of the ruling Awami League party.
The journalist was left with severe bruises and an injured ear. Police said they were looking to arrest the perpetrators.
Such attacks are alarming as these are amount to plain terrorism. This aggressive behaviour especially towards a journalist is a direct threat to the freedom of the press.
BJIM expresses deep concern about this heinous attack and demands a timely justice on this regard.
On behalf of all BJIM members.
