Press Release/21 November 2023

BJIM condemns attacks on Dhaka reporter by ruling party men

Bangladeshi Journalists in International Media (BJIM) condemns the violent attack on journalist Nahid Hasan by a few ruling party's youth and student wing men in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area on November 20, 2023.

This is one of the frequent and repetitive attacks on journalists by Awami League's disciple wings -- Jubo League and Chhatra League -- in recent months.

Hasan, a journalist of online news portal Jagonews24.com, went to collect news while on-duty when dozens of Jubo League and Chhatra League men on motorbikes arrived on the scene and mercilessly started beating the reporter.

Such attacks on journalists further prove the choking condition of the freedom of the press and the culture of impunity where criminals' deed go free, unanswered. Such practices are simply unaccepted.

The police, in this regard, also allegedly showed reluctance to investigate the matter as perpetrators are "influential" people.

BJIM wants to call to the authorities, again, to take immediate measures and bring the criminals to justice.

Political parties must understand that journalists are not targets. They must respect the role of media to respect democracy.

The law enforcing agencies also must not have any excuses to provide foolproof security and ensure safety to journalists.

BJIM stands in support of Hasan and all journalists who risk their safety to document the truth for the public.

On behalf of all BJIM members,

SAM Jahan, Convener, BJIM

&

Faisal Mahmud, Member Secretary, BJIM
