ZYMA ISLAM
Zyma Islam is a senior reporter with The Daily Star with a passion for the use of data in story-telling and believes in evidence-driven journalism. Zyma's repertoire of work contains three common themes: the abuse of power, inequality and state-backed corruption.
She specializes in rights violations by the state and law enforcement agencies, with a focus on torture, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and repressive legislation. She holds an interest in cross-border capital flight, illegal profiteering, white collar crime, and how big companies collude with the state to deprive the disenfranchised.
She believes in tangible impact and routinely compels the government, the judiciary and the state machinery to step up and take action based on her journalism.
Zyma is a graduate of Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Asian University for Women.
She is an associate member of BJIM.
